Zimmer Durom Recall Latest News
The Zimmer Durom Hip is Failing, Patients are Suing

American's are receiving more and more joint replacements every year. Hip replacements is just one way for elderly people, or individuals with joint problems to get many more years of enjoyment out of their bodies. Because this procedure has become so general, a lot of people do not bother to ask or question their doctors, nor do they question the manufacturer of the joint replacement hardware about the quality assurance or the technology that is being used. This has unfortunately caused serious injury and damages to yourself or to your loved ones. Find out if someone you know has recently undergone a hip replacement surgery, keep reading to find out what to do if you received a Zimmer Durom hip replacement.

The reasons are numerous why either yourself or one of your loved ones might have undergone a Zimmer Durom hip replacement surgery, ultimately it has possibly led to a dangerous or painful situation for yourself or one of your loved ones. Hip replacement, also known as hip arthroplasty, is a fairly common procedure where the hip joint itself is removed from the body and then replaced by an implant. There are many reasons for actually doing this, one thing is arthritis that is being caused by an irritated joint, sometimes damage can occur over the lifetime of a joint, the treatment of a common hip fracture, which happens often to older people.

What is considered to be modern hip replacement surgery has been in effect since the 70's, this is why the public perceives it as such a commonplace thing. Zimmer Durom provides hip replacement devices for hip replacement surgeries, most commonly involves three separate pieces, designed to mimic or duplicate the operation of a natural joint. A hip replacement kit includes a femur bone metal attachment. Included is a man made component that mimics the joint itself and allows for natural movement similar to the original joint, finally there is either some type of bone cement or screws that holds the whole thing in place.

Often after the initial hip replacement surgery there is a need for a revision, a revision is a second surgery necessary to correct any issues with the original surgery. Unfortunately, this is something many elderly and even healthy young patients cannot tolerate. This is the main focus of what is becoming known as the zimmer hip replacement lawsuit. Surgeons and doctors were choosing the Zimmer Durom for patients that under normal conditions would require a full hip replacement, as it was designed to be long lasting. Even though this was the case, close to 12 percent of the people who received the Zimmer Durom hip implant needed a revision surgery within two years, prompted both emotional and physical reactions.

Though Zimmer Durom has stated that this high failure rate is a caused by surgeon error, however in July of 2008 they stopped the sales of their hip replacement device. Zimmer Durom went ahead and funded a study, what they found was that 8 percent of the people that received the initial hip replacement required a revision surgery withing a two year period. This has led many in the medical and legal communities to believe that the issue is with the replacement device and not with the surgeons.
